We report on intial experience using a short-breath-hold hyperpolarized 3He technique to obtain maps of intrapulmonary oxygen partial pressures (pO2) in patients with lung disease. Two single-lung-transplant COPD patients were imaged. Features of the pO2 maps are interpreted within the context of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and potential pitfalls of the underlying pO2 measurement strategy are discussed.
