A novel method for the design of short and ultra-short gradient coils for MRI is used to generate layouts for three gradient coils. It is shown how the theoretical stream function formulation translates into practical design. The coils are wound on Plexiglas formers and assembled into a prototype gradient coil set. The gradient coil set is tested in a 4.7T animal scanner under low-current conditions and with the goal of testing the numerical predictions of gradient strength and field linearity. It will be demonstrated that these tests underscore the practicality and efficiency of this novel design method.
