Atrophy of gray- and white matter (GM and WM, respectively) provides important information about pathology in multiple sclerosis. However, the partial volume averaging between different tissues, even when the slice thickness is small, results in false classification of GM and WM, making accurate estimation of these tissue volumes difficult. An iterative procedure based on the combination of partial volume averaging and bias field correction is proposed for accurate classification of GM and WM. This method was applied to 14 MS patients with excellent results.
