A prerequisite for cardiac MRI is the alignment of the data acquisition with the respiration and the cardiac cycles. Several techniques have been developed in order to overcome the major problems of conventional ECG triggering and respiratory gating. The proposed self-gating sequence widens the scope of cardiac MRI significantly. Once a dataset is acquired, one has a free choice of reconstructing cardiac movies and respiration movies with an arbitrarily number of movie frames. Furthermore, there are several possibilities to deal with diseased animals where other techniques simply fail
