Insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes patients were studied before and after 5 months of combined strength and endurance exercise training. Intramyocellular lipids (IMCL) and mitochondrial function were measured using 1H and 31P MRS, respectively, whereas blood glucose homeostasis was evaluated by plasma HbA1c and fasting plasma glucose measurements. Although IMCL levels did not change and oxidative capacity did not improve, the exercise training did result in an increased maximal workload per kg body mass and a modest, though significant improvement of blood glucose homeostasis.
