Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) holds significant promise for examining white matter microstructure and fiber integrity. Mean fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) values were acquired in the frontal, parietal, occipital, and temporal periventricular white matter in neonatal meningitis (n=12) grouped as normal (n=5) and abnormal (n=7) on the basis of conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and compared with healthy controls (n=5). Observed decreased FA values in normal as well as abnormal appearing periventricular white matter in patients was consistent with the expected pathological changes in white matter.
