For a better understanding of the relationship between the oxygen metabolism and the hemodynamic responses in fMRI, high resolution BOLD, CBV and CBF signal changes were studied at 9.4T using a cat visual stimulation model. The spatial and temporal dynamics of the CBV and CBF responses were found to be very similar, suggesting a tight coupling between the blood volume and flow regulation. Our results also suggested that an elevated deoxyhemoglobin concentration is more likely to be responsible for the BOLD poststimulus undershoot than an elevated venous CBV.
