Testing models of neurodegenerative spread via regional atrophy and its slope

Atrophy progression in Alzheimers Disease is highly stereotyped, starting from medial temporal origins, to adjoining temporal and parietal cortices, and finally to frontal cortex. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively compare 3 popular models of spread: exponential, sigmoid and network-diffusion, by applying them to MRI-derived volumetric data from the public ADNI database. We test how well these models capture the relationship between baseline and rate of change of atrophy. We find that the network-diffusion models slope prediction matched measured atrophy slope more accurately than competing models.
