Mean diffusivity measurement in gray matter: a potential image-based biomarker of MCI and AD

The changes of mean diffusivity in cortical gray matter were compared among 121 participants, divided into three groups: healthy, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimers disease. The percentage changes in frontal and temporal lobes between Alzheimers disease and healthy is approximately equal to that in Alzheimers disease with mild cognitive impairment and mild cognitive impairment with healthy. The involved regions of Alzheimers disease are overlapped with that by mild cognitive impairment and normal. Combining the changes and involved regions of mean diffusivity, it could be suggested that mild cognitive impairment is a transition stage between healthy and Alzheimers disease.
