Efficient, Robust, Nonlinear, and Guaranteed Positive Definite Diffusion Tensor Estimation

We describe a method to estimate the diffusion tensor D directly from the nonlinear relationship between diffusion-weighted images and D. A modified gradient descent algorithm is used, one which ensures that D remains positive definite. Iterative reweighting is applied to remove outliers.
