Hyperventilation (HV), a common feature of many diseases, results in a constellation of metabolic compensatory changes. Though a number of animal and human studies have suggested metabolic changes are mild in degree, an alternative conclusion from several animal studies is that hyperventilation results in major metabolic compromise. Since anesthesia effects may be a potential confound, we wanted to clearly characterize the degree ofmetabolic effects in the awake human, using dual interleaved 1H and 31P at 4T as a methodological probe.
