The diffusion orientation transform establishes a direct link between the probabilities for water displacements and the apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) that can be obtained from high angular resolution diffusion imaging. ADCs can be transformed into a spherical tensor enabling the computation of the probabilities via a Laplace series. Alternatively, the probability profile can be reconstructed directly. A matrix formulation of the method enables a simple implementation of the transform. Smoother probability profiles can be obtained by a simple modification of the signal values. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate the ability of the DOT to accurately resolve fiber orientation heterogeneity.
