Spherical Harmonic Inductive Detection (SHID) Coils for Negative Feedback Control of Eddy Current Fields

The theoretical groundwork for a novel class of coils that may enable a new strategy for the design of gradient coils is presented. The novel coils facilitate monitoring, by means of Faraday induction, the rates of change of the individual spherical harmonic components of a transient magnetic field. A set of these coils could then incorporated, in conjunction with an electrical shim set, in a negative feedback system that actively corrects those components as they arise.
