Intra- and extracellular tissue sodium contents were measured in myocardial infarction (isolated rat hearts, n=49) in the time course of infarct healing using a chemical shift MR imaging sequence. Significant reduction of intracellular tissue sodium content and significant increase of extracellular tissue sodium content were found in necrosis, in granulation tissue and in scar tissue.
