Hepatic ATP synthesis was quiantified using 31P MR-spectroscopy and the saturation-transfer experiment. The quality of the localisation (1D-ISIS) was specific and gave sufficient SNR. This is, to our knowledge, the first published quantification of ATP-synthesis in the human liver. Values and precision of data from the present study are in excellent agreement with data from isolated perfused rat livers (Thoma et al. 1987).
