We present a method to produce a map of the number of fibre-orientations in each voxel of a 3D diffusion MRI acquisition. We fit a hierarchy of models of increasing complexity to the particle displacement density, by finding the best fit to the model parameters in each case. The results from this method were compared with those obtained using spherical harmonics. We found the new method provides denser clusters of fibre-crossings, which indicates a more reliable result. The results obtained from this method could be used as a gold standard for simpler, faster methods of mapping the number of fibre-orientations.
