The functional response to sensory stimuli is heterogeneous. Here we investigated the heterogeneity by varying stimulus parameters at a depth of layer 4 in the &[alpha]-chloralose anesthetized rat. The neurometabolic-neurovascular responses (BOLD, CBF, pO2) and electrical activity (AP, LFP) were measured in during 30 s forepaw stimulation and as a function of stimulation parameters (0.2, 2.0, and 10.0 mA; 1, 3, and 9 Hz). The correlation between the BOLD-CBF, BOLD-AP, BOLD-FP, CBF-AP, and CBF-LFP responding patterns were ~0.16, ~0.2, ~1.0, ~0.08, and ~0.93, respectively. Therefore the AP signals have closer correlation to CBF and BOLD signals than the LFP signals.
