In this work, numerical and experimental studies of the TEM resonator at ultra high field (UHF) are performed using the finite difference time domain method at 340 MHz and using an 8 Tesla MRI system. An in-depth look at the homogeneity of the excite field as well as the local- and global- polarization of the electromagnetic waves inside the head-coils cavity is provided for the coils standard mode of operation when it is empty and loaded. Based on the numerical and experimental results, which are in excellent agreement, an electromagnetic characterization of the meaning of loading RF head-coils during UHF experiments is provided.
