Standardized radiographs markedly underestimate the incidence of osteonecrosis (ON) after fixation of femoral neck fractures. ON was identified using MAVRIC sequence in 75% of the patients, in 60% using FSE images and <1% using conventional radiographs. There was a significant underestimation of the identified ON volume using FSE compared to MAVRIC sequence (p=0.001).
