In this study we present a setup capable to monitor changes in ionic concentration gradients in vitro . The main parts of the setup are a three dimensional cell culture, a completely MR-compatible bioreactor and a 23 Na surface coil. In a pilot study we performd a 23 Na CSI experiment to show that we are able to resolve a non varying reference compartment from a compartment with varying physiological parameters.
