Temperature mapping in Human Brown Adipose Tissue Using Fat-Water MRI with Explicit Fitting of Water Peak Location

This work aims to apply a novel fat-water MRI (FWRMI)-based thermometry method to observations of both activated and non-activated brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adult human subjects, to demonstrate the methods ability to distinguish between the two states of BAT. This FWMRI-based thermometry method explicitly models the frequency shift of the water peak due to temperature changes in regions with both fat and water, such as BAT. FWRMI and PET-CT scans were performed twice for each subject, after cold and warm exposure. FWMRI mFFE scans were able to detect temperature increase in BAT regions of subjects with PET-confirmed BAT activation.
