Comparison of TRUST, projection-based T2 imaging with susceptometry-based oximetry for the quantification of venous oxygen saturation

Abnormal levels of CMRO2 are associated with a variety of disorders of the central nervous system. The critical step for CMRO2 quantification is estimation of venous oxygen saturation (SvO2). Here, we compare SvO2 in the superior sagittal sinus using three methods: susceptometry-based oximetry (SBO), projection-based T2 (PT2), and TRUST. Average SvO2 was 654% (SBO), 673% (PT2), and 614% (TRUST). There was good agreement among the three methods with slightly lower values found with TRUST (ANOVA, p<0.05). The main advantage of SBO over PT2 and TRUST is the simultaneous measurement of cerebral blood flow, which provides generally higher temporal resolution.
