The Effect of Hypoxia on Resting-State Functional Connectivity in the Human Brain

Rapid ascent to high altitude results in arterial
hypoxaemia, frequently leading to acute mountain
sickness (AMS). The precise mechanisms remain poorly
understood. AMS symptoms can include cognitive and
behavioural changes. We postulate that changes in
cerebral blood flow in response to hypoxia may result in
changes in the brains resting-state functional
connectivity and, therefore, could be studied using
resting-state functional MRI. 12 subjects underwent
serial scans over a 22-hour period of normobaric
hypoxia. The results did not show a global increase in
connectivity to account for the cognitive/behavioural
symptoms. This suggests that alternative
pathophysiological processes may contribute to these
symptoms.
