Iron Deposition in the Putamen

Iron deposition in the basal ganglia is part of the normal aging process. It is also known that elevated iron content in the basal ganglia is often an indicator of disease. Goal in this paper is to understand the normal variations in iron with an elderly population so that we can differentiate normal from abnormal iron content. Current approaches for extracting iron content use either R2, R2 or R*2. In this work, we use the high pass filtered phase images from an SWI (susceptibility weighted imaging) scan. These have been shown to correlate well with iron content in brain tissues
