We tested hypothesis whether myocardial steatosis accompany the states of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance and if it correlates with cardiac function in 59 individuals. We have found a graded increase in myocardial triglyceride content with development of glucose intolerance and diabetes. Although it is unclear if myocardial steatosis is associated with decrements in left ventricular funciton in humans, these data provide intital support for the myocardial lipotoxicity theory in a clinical setting.
