The attribution of neuropsychiatric events to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) remains challenging, as there is no single diagnostic test and the symptoms of neuropsychiatric SLE are diverse and non-specific. We have used diffusion tensor imaging to investigate structural changes in patients with normal conventional MRI scans and found that damage to normal appearing white matter is associated with neuropsychiatric events in SLE.
