Loss of skeletal muscle mass or sarcopenia and osteoporosis are both features of aging commonly observed among postmenopausal women. However, it is unclear whether these changes are related or do they occur independently of each other. In addition, little is known whether there is any relationship between lumbar muscle mass and muscle perfusion variables. Our goal in this study was to address these questions through study of the interrelationships among sarcopenia, osteoporosis, and perfusion indices of the lumbar spine in female elderly patients of similar age.
