We investigated the apparent diffusion coefficient of water (ADCW) in the CA1 region of the hippocampus after global cerebral ischemia in the rat. The results were correlated with immunohistochemical analysis. An elevated ADCW three days after reperfusion coincided with neuronal death. A subsequent increase in ADCw five weeks after reperfusion correlated with the activation of a caspase-3 dependent pathway of astrocytic death. We conclude that ADCW can reflect changes in a number of cell elements, cell morphology or other cell properties connected with apoptosis.
