A finite difference (FD) model of water diffusion within a two-dimensional (2D) array of semi-permeable cells separated by extracellular space has been developed. The FD model enables the evaluation of the effect of several biophysical parameters on water diffusion including cell size, cell volume fraction and membrane permeability as well as the intrinsic T2-relaxation and diffusion coefficients in the intra- and extracellular spaces. In this report, the effect of cellular swelling is modeled and compared to experimental results obtained from clinical stroke and ischemia experiments performed in cell cultures.
