Human cadaveric patellae (N=14) were investigated. T2* relaxation time and MRI-derived apparent bone volume fraction were correlated with bone mineral density and apparent bone area fraction obtained from pQCT measurements. Moderate statistically significant linear correlations were found between MRI and pQCT parameters. The present results demonstrate the feasibility of MRI methods in evaluating trabecular bone density and structure. The prediction of bone composition and the mechanical properties can be further improved by combining two MRI methodologies developed for the assessment of trabecular bone.
