The optimal lung preservation conditions for lung transplantation remain controversial. We evaluated the effect of preservation temperature and percent alveolar oxygen on rat lung metabolism by carbon-13 decoupled proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of lung extracts. Oxygen content and preservation temperature influenced pulmonary metabolism and energetics, particularly after long-term storage. This method offers promise as a rapid and inexpensive technique for testing multiple preservation conditions.
