Liquid-phase hyperpolarized contrast media can be imaged with high sensitivity and virtually no endogenous background signals, and promise to enhance many applications of MRI. We describe a simple and inexpensive technique for assessing the feasibility of candidate substrate compounds for use with parahydrogen induced polarization. The method is illustrated using proton and natural abundance carbon-13 NMR spectra of a sample compound.
