Novel directionally encoded colormaps that incorporate tensor mode (DECMs) are generated from DTMRI data. Tensor mode is a measure that distinguishes linear from planar anisotropy. DTMRI were acquired in 2 patients with glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). The use of DECMs for investigating the effect of the tumor by distinguishing between tracts which retain high linear anisotropy within the tumor versus those that were reduced to predominantly planar anisotropy appears to be of great advantage. DECMs in patients with GBM demonstrate the ability to more clearly visualize existing fiber tracks and disrupted fiber tracks within tumors.
