In this study skeletal muscle injury was evaluated using contrast enhanced MRI with the macromolecular contrast agent Gadomer. Quantitative T1 mapping and compartment modeling were used to calculate the peak contrast agent concentrations in ischemic and normal tibialis anterior muscles in a rabbit model. Significant differences were measured in the peak tissue contrast agent concentration between day 14 and day 28 after the induction of ischemia. These methods may have potential to track changes in tissue physiology related to inflammation and necrosis.
