MRI
has an increasingly large role in the clinical work-up of dementia. In the
new research criteria, atrophy of the medial temporal lobe is mentioned as
one of the diagnostic criteria for AD, but norm values are still awaited.
Mixed disease (i.e. combination with vascular disease) remains a challenge,
as there are no diagnostic guidelines available. MRI measures hold promise as
markers of disease progression and can potentially be used as outcome
measures in trials. The heterogeneity of AD is increasingly acknowledged. MRI
may prove valuable to describe endophenotypes of AD, both in terms of structural
and functional brain changes
