This study initially investigate the correlation of increased brain iron accumulation with the severity of cognitive impairment in patients with Alzheimers disease using advanced quantitative R2' mapping. The results revealed that R2' is a reliable parameter in measuring brain iron deposition in AD patients; Furthermore, regional R2' and brain iron concentration, especially which of bilateral hippocampus and parietal cortex, were significantly positive correlated with the severity of cognitive impairment, indicating that R2' can be used as an imaging marker to evaluate disease progression. R2' technique might provide exciting potential applications to the diagnosis, longitudinal monitoring, and therapeutic development for AD.
