Although ventilation defects are a significant feature of 3 He MRI images of asthmatic lungs, the relationship of those defects to clinical symptoms of asthma is not well understood. Using longitudinal 3 He MRI data, ventilation defects were classified into categories based on their behavior over time. This approach will be useful in characterizing the emergence, reversal, and persistence of such defects in asthmatic patients. Further studies will investigate the relationship between emergent ventilation defects and sites of new airway injury.
