Long term exposure of aluminium in rodents has been shown to form amyloid oligomer, similar to Alzheimers disease (AD) pathology. The present study evaluates the effects of chronic aluminium exposure on the cortical metabolism associated with glutamatergic and GABAergic neurons. The metabolism was studied using 1 H-[ 13 C]-NMR spectroscopy in conjunction with infusion of [1,6- 13 C 2 ]glucose in mice treated with aluminium (i.p.). The chronic exposure of aluminium reduced TCA cycle and neurotransmitter cycle fluxes of the excitatory and inhibitory neurons.
