Synopsis

Keywords: Myocardium, Cardiovascular, omega-3 PUFAs, myocardial strain, cardiac magnetic resonance feature tracking

Motivation: The impact of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on cardiovascular disease is a prominent research focus, but recent studies have produced inconsistent findings.

Goal(s): This study used cardiac magnetic resonance feature tracking (CMR-FT) to analyze the relationship between blood levels of omega-3 PUFAs and left atrial and left ventricular myocardial strain in hypertensive patients, thereby assessing the impact of omega-3 PUFAs on left heart function.

Approach: The study utilized b-SSFP cine sequences, CVI42 software, Spearman correlation analysis, and multivariate linear regression analysis.

Results: Elevated omega-3 PUFAs levels may impair left heart myocardial strain in hypertensive patients.

Impact: These findings highlight a potential need for caution in the use of omega-3 PUFAs supplements for primary cardiovascular disease prevention, considering uncertain cardiovascular benefits. The results also provide imaging evidence to support early clinical intervention.
