Visceral, bone marrow, and muscle adiposity have effects on volumetric bone mineral density in women: a study based on MRI and QCT

Synopsis

Motivation: The relationship between volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and abdominal adipose tissue is unclear.

Goal(s): To investigate the relationship between vBMD and adipose tissue measured by QCT and MRI in Chinese women.

Approach: 273 women were included in this retrospective study. vBMD was measured by QCT, and liver fat content (LFC), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), visceral adipose tissue (VAT), bone marrow proton density fat fraction (BM PDFF) and paraspinal muscles proton density fat fraction (PSM PDFF) were assessed by QCT and chemical shift-encoded MRI.

Results: In Chinese women, high VAT, BM PDFF, and PSM PDFF were associated with low lumbar vBMD.

Impact: Our study showed that VAT, BM PDFF and PSM PDFF were negatively correlated with vBMD. The findings elucidate the role of adipose tissue distribution in osteoporosis and provide new ideas for clinical diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
