Motivation: Low-field MRI offers cost reduction and portability but compromises image quality due to lower SNR and longer acquisition times.
Goal(s): In this study we have designed, fabricated, and tested flexible, stretchable RF coils to improve sensitivity and efficiency for extremity imaging.
Approach: Six solenoid prototypes were constructed using Litz wire. These were characterized and benchmarked against a standard coil for wrist imaging inside a 72 mT MRI scanner.
Results: The most efficient stretchable coil achieved over twice the efficiency of the standard solenoid. Both phantom and in vivo imaging demonstrated these coils can enhance signal levels, retaining significant image quality in low-field systems.
Impact: Compared to standard solenoids, stretchable solenoid-type coils offer enhanced image quality for in vivo extremity imaging due to proximity to the body. We therefore propose these coils for improved medical diagnosis in low-field scanners.
