Motivation: There is a lack of pulse sequences capable of slice selection without B0 gradients that are robust to B0 and B1 inhomogeneity.
Goal(s): We aim to create an adiabatic pulse capable of slice selection in a B1 gradient which is robust to B0 and B1 inhomogeneity.
Approach: We have applied an amplitude-modulated adiabatic hyperbolic secant (AMHS1) pulse to Hoult’s B1-selective rotating frame imaging, which utilizes one B1 field, B1y, as a gradient and another, B1x, for excitation.
Results: B1-selective slice inversion is achieved using two AMHS1 pulses with a surface coil at 9.4T on water phantoms.
Impact: Slice selection without B0 gradients allows for faster gradient switching, silent scans, and no eddy currents. Low cost, portable MRI systems with no B0 gradients can build off this pulse to recreate more mainstay sequences of clinical MRI.
