MRI-PDFF liver fat changes in patients with diabetes treated with SGLT2 inhibitor versus controls.

Synopsis

Motivation: Control of hepatic steatosis is important because it is both a complication and a risk factor for type 2 diabetes.

Goal(s): To investigate the effects of sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibition on weight loss and liver fat content as measured by MRI-PDFF.

Approach: A chemical shift encoded multi-echo sequence was used to measure liver PDFF.

Results: A significant decrease in liver PDFF was only observed in the treated group with stronger association between weight and PDFF in this group. The novelty of this study is in the length of SGLT2-i treatment and the use of non-invasive MRI PDFF for liver fat assessment.

Impact: Hepatic steatosis is both a complication and a risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Noninvasive measurement of proton density fat fraction (PDFF) can be used to detect hepatic steatosis decrease after one year treatment with sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors.
