Motivation: Increased demand for MRI in radiation therapy motivated us to retrospectively evaluate the number of MR scans completed between 2019 and 2023.
Goal(s): Our goal was to demonstrate the need for additional resources including software, education, training, hours of operation, and MR trained personnel.
Approach: The number of CT and MRI scans were compared over five years for radiation therapy planning and scans for MR- guided brachytherapy. Scan time for different protocols was evaluated, and the number of staff required to expand clinical operations.
Results: The number of MRI scans has doubled over the five-year period.
Impact: The results have prompted the hiring of additional MR technologists, an increase in hours of operation, and investment to increase the MRI capabilities in the department. MRI is considered essential for personalized radiation treatment planning, guidance and delivery.
