Motexafin Gadolinium (MGd) is an investigational radiation enhancer, which can be detected with MRI. We studied glioblastoma multiforme patients who received MGd to compare the MGd enhancement pattern with that produced by Omniscan. The volume of Omniscan enhancement was significantly larger than the volume of MGd enhancement. On average Omniscan produced a 20% higher signal enhancement in comparison to MGd. The weaker MGd enhancement may result from the tendency of GBMs to be relatively necrotic tumors combined with the fact that MGd binds to tumor cells. MGd appeared to label both active and necrotic tumor areas.
