Radiation injury to eyes is a significant concern for astronauts during the space exploration and to patients undergoing radiation therapy. In the present study, we examined the effect of high Z, high energy (HZE) particles irradiation on the integrity of rat eyes using diffusion tensor imaging. Injuries to the lens and retina of the irradiated rat eyes were detected. Diffusion tensor imaging may be a potential modality to quantify radiation induced injury to the eye.
