Effects of hormonal contraception on the default mode network: a resting-state MRI study

It is well established that sex differences occur in
brain structure and function, which result in behavioral
dissimilarities. However, only in recent years, the
effect of menstrual cycle phase and hormonal
contraceptives has been considered. In this research we
used spatially constrained independent component
analysis to infer differences in resting state BOLD
response of the default mode network in a healthy
population of young women. When comparing natural cycle
(NC) group with hormonal contraceptives (HC) group,
results show a decreased activity in the posterior
cingulate cortex in the HC group.
