Motivation: Recent fMRI developments allow acquiring submillimeter images to study human mesoscopic functional organization. However, typically employed resolutions of 0.512µL (0.8mm3) voxels are not only SNR starved, but also marginally adequate.
Goal(s): We previously demonstrated the feasibility of acquiring functional images with 0.042µL (0.35mm) voxels using 10.5T and NORDIC denoising. Such high resolution functional images, however, far surpass resolutions of typical anatomical references.
Approach: We demonstrate the ability to acquire concurrent 0.05µL structural images.
Results: This allows identification of the Stria of Gennari, while demonstrating laminar modulations in human V1 in the presence and absence of visual stimulation at the single subject level.
Impact: Imaging with the highest spatial resolution at 10.5T, while moving towards the 0.01µL voxel volume goal (Brain Initiative 2.0), reduces single voxels to a few thousand neurons, heralding new avenues in human neuroscience with fMRI
