An Open Source Motion-compensated Cardiac Diffusion Sequence Validated Across Different MRI Systems and Gradient Strengths

Synopsis

Motivation: Cardiac Diffusion MRI results are difficult to compare due to variations in pulse sequence implementation.

Goal(s): To develop an open source second order motion compensated cardiac diffusion sequence that can be applied reproducibly at different MRI systems.

Approach: The sequence was developed using the open source sequence development platform Pulseq. Diffusion gradients optimized for different gradient strengths were tested on three volunteers across three different MRI systems.

Results: DWI and DTI data could be acquired at all systems, and a systematic comparison revealed hardware-based performance differences.

Impact: The sequence allows for consistent and comparable application of cardiac diffusion MRI at different MRI systems and field strengths enabling standardized multi-center studies and cross-vendor cooperation.
