Synopsis

Keywords: Aging, Aging, Hippocampal subfield, Learning, Memory

Motivation: Assessing gray matter volume changes in hippocampal subfields will be help to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of age-related cognitive decline.

Goal(s): To assess age-related changes in hippocampal subfield and their associations with Learning and memory performance in the healthy urban Indian population.

Approach: To assess age related atrophy in hippocampal subfield. High-resolution 3D T1 images were acquired seventy-six participants, and divided into three groups based on age. Hippocampal subfield segmentation was performed using FreeSurfer.

Results: Reduced volume of CA1, CA4, subiculum, pre subiculum, Para subiculum, molecular layer HP body, fimbria head, granule cell and molecular layer of the dentate gyrus (GC-ML-DG) with aging.

Impact: Decreased hippocampus subfield volume maybe associated with deficits Auditory Verbal Learning (AVL); AVL-Immediate and Delay Recall Memory.
